Angel Luque
*1927 in Córdoba, Spain
Self taught. Participated in the collective exhibitions "Círculo de Bellas Artes", "Artistas de Hoy" and "Homenaje a Goya" in Madrid from 1948 until 1955. Was part of the "Artistas de Hoy" Group. Its artists, Oteiza, Chillida, Feito, Canogar, Saura and Luque, would meet at the Galería Fernando Fé in Madrid, later known as the "El Paso" Group.
In 1955 Luque moves to Caracas, Venezuela. In addition to painting, he works on a series of etchings in a workshop shared with the artists Luisa Palacios and Humberto Jaimes Sanchez around 1962. Between 1962 and 1963 he designs scenographies (for works by Goldoni and Machiavelli) for the theatre ensemble of the Instituto Venezolano Italiano de Cultura in Caracas.
Since December 1967 Angel Luque has lived in Paris. After the creation of designs in Paris and an extended stay in Munich Luque turns to a material that is new to him – perspex. In 1969 these sculptures are exhibited by Gallery Buchholz in Munich in conjunction with four geometric Luque screen prints printed by the gallery.
In Luque's sculptures we discover unreal spaces, the appearance and reality of which are created by visual and plastic effects Luque produces by making incisions into his dice-shaped perspex sculptures and by roughening certain surfaces thereof. Here it is not movement, as is the case with kinetic art, that provides the fourth dimension but it is rather the visual-spatial versatility that the viewer can discover from various perspectives.
